For your convenience and knowledge we have provided the the an excerpt from California State Law regarding insurance repairs in the State of California.

California - No insurer shall require that an automobile be repaired at a specific repair shop; or direct, suggest or recommend that an automobile be repaired at a specific repair shop unless such referral is expressly requested by the claimant; or the claimant has been informed in writing of the right to select the repair facility; and, the insurer that elects to repair a vehicle directs, suggests or recommends that a specific repair shop be used, shall cause the damaged vehicle to be restored to it's condition prior to the loss at no additional cost to the claimant other than as stated in the policy or as otherwise allowed by these regulations, require a claimant to travel an unreasonable distance either to inspect a replacement automobile, to conduct an inspection of the vehicle, to obtain a repair estimate or to have the automobile repaired at a specific repair shop.

If partial losses are settled on the basis of a written estimate prepared by or for the insurer, the insurer shall supply the claimant with a copy of the estimate upon which the settlement is based. The estimate prepared by or for the insurer shall be in accordance with applicable policy provisions and of an amount that will allow for repairs to be made in a workmanlike manner. If the claimant subsequently claims, based upon a written estimate that he or she obtains, that the necessary repairs will exceed the written estimate prepared by or for the insurer, the insurer shall: pay the difference between the written estimate and the higher estimate obtained by the claimant; or, promptly provide the claimant with the name of at least one repair shop, if requested by the claimant pursuant to subsection 2695.8(e)(2), that will make the repairs for the amount of the written estimate. If the insurer designates fewer than three repair shops, the insurer shall assure that the repairs are preformed in a workmanlike manner. The insurer shall maintain documentation of all such communications; or reasonably adjust any written estimates prepared by the repair shop of the insured's choice.

What this really means is you can take your car anywhere you choose to have it repaired! .... Alan

AN OPEN LETTER TO INSURANCE EXECUTIVES AND AGENTS.

As auto glass shop owners, we know our technicians see vehicles on a daily basis that reflect shoddy windshield installation and poor quality repair. In addition, unethical behavior is becoming more prevalent, as the policyholder’s choice in selecting an auto glass shop is not being honored. That concerns us. We are writing this letter because we believe it concerns you, too.

If repairs are promised without proper evaluation or if proper procedures aren’t followed during a windshield installation, policyholders are going to be dissatisfied, and the rework may cost you more money.

Remember, the windshield is a critical part of a vehicle’s safety system, and beware of extreme bargains or unbelievably high repair rates.

Every industry is under pressure in today’s economy. Profitability is tight and getting tighter. We are all looking for ways to do more with less. But cutting corners on quality and safety isn’t the way to go.

The independently owned glass shops of the PPG PROSTARS national alliance of certified, experienced, quality-driven professionals work to build solid relationships with local insurance companies/agents. We are dedicated to servicing your policyholders’ auto glass needs while upholding ethical standards and championing safety.

Work with us. Know the facts—and share the facts with your policyholders, friends, and family.

Sincerely,

Alan Eggers
